Back jacket provides extensive descriptions of each side in the manner of subsections of a tracklist, as a series of movements or sections. They are too wordy to be included in the tracklist itself.

Mastering Credits from Dead Wax where there is the following:

SS = Sterling Sound (early signature for Sterling)
RL = Robert Ludwig / Bob Ludwig

More production credits on rear jacket.

"RE-1" indicates "Re-Cut" and not "Reissued." A new lacquer is cut because there was something unacceptable about the previous lacquer cut. In such instances it is probable the old one was discarded without even being used for pressings.

Lonesome Orange Kid
The “The Nude Paper Sermon,” first released on this recording, is the first example of a new genre created by Eric Salzman. "Music Theatre" is distinct from "Opera" (eg. Peter Grimes, Akhnaten, Le Grand Macabre, Nixon in China) or "Musical Theatre" (eg. My Fair Lady, West Side Story, A Little Night Music).

In 1972 Salzman described "Music Theatre" as “a primarily nonverbal art integrating sound, movement, image, music, language, idea, thinking, [and] feeling.” In this performance of "The Nude Paper Sermon" Stacy Keach reads - often unintelligibly - a collage of poems, speeches and prose over a consort of voices and instruments.

Avant-garde composer, music critic and historian Eric Salzman (1933-2017) studied at Columbia and Princeton with leading US composers of the postwar avant-garde - pioneers in atonal, serial, avant-garde and electroacoustic music. His foundational textbook, “20th-Century Music: An Introduction," endures as the a must-read for anyone interested in the music of this period, especially in America.

Salzman was an avid birder:

“The other thrushes are baroque artists, constantly elaborating, reworking and adding to their showy repertoire. . . . The hermit thrush is a classicist, working on the principle of less is more, multum in parvo. Constantly changing variations appear within a simple, firm musical framework. Complex chords and high overtones climb and resonate between the tree trunks to create a sense of space and depth: a song in three — no, four — dimensional space that seems to speak of eternal things.”
