Kolam, more like a masquerade than a drama in the European sense involving dance, mime, and highly elaborate costumes, belongs mainly to three villages in southern Sri Lanka, and even there it is dying out. This recording includes songs and music for the dance sections, and comes with outstanding notes and photos of the intricately beautiful masks and costumes. Performer: Gundāsa. Video clip: Kolam performance Veli Rosenberg. Kolam is another low-country tradition from Sri Lankas southern coast. Although it includes elements of ritual and even trance, it may be classified, however, as a form of folk theatre. A loose plot binds several stock characters and scenes together. The actual play is usually based on a Buddhist Jataka story. Two drummers usually accompany kolam mask mimes Jukka O. The characters lines may be sung by a nearby singer, but they are sometimes also spoken and even sung by the actors themselves. In Sri Lankan dance these demons would each be depicted through eighteen wood-carved faces, accompanying which would be the chief of Sanni, himself depicted in the so-called Medicine Masks Maha Kola. Kolam masks were designed to perform comic folk Kolam dances in the West and South-West region of the country - and the Ariyapala Wijesuriya family is among the few that has maintained this tradition in the region
