Vanguard is primarily known as a folk and blues label, which makes the 2014 release of Ace's compilation Follow Me Down: Vanguard's Lost Psychedelic Era 1966-1970 so noteworthy. Like so many labels and musicians of the time, Vanguard expanded their horizons in the late '60s, taking a cue from the success of their act Country Joe & the Fish to sign a bunch of weird, woolly guitar acts that specialized in winding, elliptical jams loosely rooted in folk. Founded in the late 1950s, Vanguard Records quickly established itself as a stalwart folk and blues label, issuing Joan Baez. Why Because Vanguard Records was best known as a top quality folk and blues label. You know, people like Joan Baez, Odetta, the Weavers, Buddy Guy and the like. A series of lost records. In fact, many of the featured artists only ever produced the one or just a few singles before they sank back into the primeval creative mud. Others, in contrast, rose higher into stardom, however. There are 18 tracks on this single CD release including some intriguing folk such as the Third Powers Gettin Together which really should be heard by anyone interested in either Jimi Hendrix or Cream. This is power-rock

This is mostly garage and acid blues, essentially proto hard rock.
Temetnosce, And sure enough, b-side LP1 skips several times. I can take it back to my Record Store and get my $ back easy enough but may just suck it up as the rest of it is amazing. Record Store release on ltd pressing so unless they fix the remastering and re-press all will be affected. Thanks for the heads up.
Same thing with mine. Just on my way to return it!Great comment. Many thanks!!!
Musically speaking, this is a great collection of psych rarities. But buyer beware! There are an unknown (but apparently widespread) number of faulty presses due to a mastering problem. I've gone through two copies now and both skipped throughout the b-side of LP1. Still haven't heard back from Vanguard about a replacement.
Pretty much the same skips on Side B - first 2 tracks. Rest of album plays fine and some gems on it. Shame about the pressing though.
Yeah, mine had the same problem. Let me know if they ever get back to you.
